Forum Ticker!
« on: January 26, 2011, 02:18:04 PM »
Just to ensure the forum's heartbeat doesn't stop, add a random comment in this thread every day. Doesn't matter what it is, just make a post each time you visit. I think it could get humorous and I'm interested to see how long we can keep the life of this thread going, to ensure the forum's "pulse" keeps beating!

I will start, given today is January 26th....Happy Australia Day to all Aussies and honorary Aussies!

I could go for being an Aussie, as long as it's only for one day

Actually, I liked the fire works that was shown during the AO, especially since they where shown while Ferrer slaughtered Nadal at the court  Sure, Nadal was injured, but Ferrer played a great game. I do hope it's a final between him and Federer, with the later as the winner.

Ok... here's a run down and some pics from earlier in the week. The town of Rochester was about 80% inundated last week in the floods and although on the surface, the town looks to have recovered very quickly... you don't have to look far to find personal hardship amongst the residents and businesses
The following is a copy of what I posted on the Australian Antique Bottle Forum...

Well.. I'm back from Rochester after only giving a couple of days. I had hoped to do a bit more there, but the volunteer co-ordination centre decided to close for Australia day and I had some pressing work committments back home!
Anyway, myself and a few other hard working volunteers did manage to acheive a lot in a fairly short time... and I must say, I'm a bit sore from lifting all manner of stuff, dragging water logged carpets, loading and unloading a huge tandem trailer numerous times and swinging a sledge hammer breaking concrete from fence posts!! Dont ya just hate it when you realise you are not as young as you once were?!!!    :(

Here's a few pics of some of the spots we assisted with...

The recreation reserve suffered badly... quite heartbreaking really as the community had just poured their heart and soul into revamping the whole area over the last six months, only to have most of their improvements damaged or washed away! Above we were removing chain wire fencing as the force of the water (with debris) had badly streched the wire and flattened the poles... gives you an idea of the force of the flood!
Note the height of the debris caught in the fence in the distance in the first pic (this is quite a long way from the Campaspe river).

This house is a few kms from the town, and probably 5kms from the river! The water is still surrounding the house after about 10 days and it stinks!! Also, the mozzies are ferocious!!  :(  Check the water level marks on the house walls... it was about 12 inches deep through the house and it amazed me the damage from just muddy water! All modern furniture and most building materials, doors, house fittings etc... were ruined. All swollen up and falling apart! Drawers swelled and couldn't be opened in cupboards... but it didnt matter much as what was inside just got thrown on the rubbish trailer anyway!
We took a huge load of stuff including smelly, soggy carpet.. and even an almost brand new fridge, TV etc... straight to the shire's rubbish pile in town.

Here's a pic of another load from some bloke's shed, about to be thrown off onto the ever increasing refuse pile! The shire had an excavator working full time loading trucks which were carting the rubbish away to some huge landfill site somewhere. They were having trouble keeping up... the pile was bigger everytime I pulled in there!

Another farm house out another direction, flooded to about 18 inches high all through the house. The water peak is marked on the tree in the front yard (just above the fence). This dairy farmer told me the farm had been in the family for over 100 years... and the house had never been threatened before! That's how far above record levels this flood went  :o  When I mentioned that he was a long way from the river... he said the water didn't come straight across from there.... it travelled down the roadways from the town and just spread out all over the coutryside. Most of his cows had mastitis from not being able to be milked for awhile... and that just adds to his woes!
The look on his dog's face just about says it all!!

I'm pleased to have been able to help... and met some great people! Some volunteers I worked with from Bendigo, Melbourne and beyond... as well as some genuinely grateful Rochester residents :) I had never been there before but it's a great little town... and I'll go out of my way to drive through there again soon, maybe stop for lunch, fill up the car with fuel.. perhaps buy a new bottle digging shovel at the hardware...

Cheers,
Chris

Good pics Chris, the devastation of what has happened to these people is unimaginable, but your first-hand descriptions lend some idea. Its just so hard to fathom how we can go through such a long drought without sufficient rains and suddenly have all this happen. Its a mystery!

Chris, you are a fine example of the genoristy us Australians are known for. Well Done mate.
Its amazing the damage that water alone can do. We once had a Park Unit about 50 metres from the Mighty Murray, and it got flooded 3 feet up the walls. We had to throw everything away, we were lucky as it was only a Holiday Place.  These People have their Houses all but destroyed. And who would have ever thought that the river could break the previous levels.
I've heard on the News that the Insurance companies will not pay out for flood damage, apparently some small print.

I think it depends on the policy Rob, and I'm not sure its all small print. A lot of the insurance co.s these days put it in clearly written statements in their booklets these days, but people still don't read them and then just refer to it as "small print". A lot of people buy insurance without realy understanding what they are and are not covered for because they regard the possibility of it happening as so remote - not hard to understand, I'm sure we all do such things at times. I'm not standing up for insurance co.s as they are notorious for finding ways to worm out of paying out. I know I read Suncorp in Qld though covers every kind of flood there is in their policies, so Qld'ers will be mostly covered.

Thanks guys

Yes, I believe many people found that they weren't insured as different companies classify flooding differently

It seems that water through your roof from a storm is different from water coming through your floorboards from a flooding river... lots of variations to an event which basically leaves you in the same predicament...wet!!!

Just heard the weather forecast this morning... after a very hot week here this week, they think the following week may see more wet tropical weather drift down from the north...from the remains of 2 cyclones!!
Just what we need....NOT!!

When speaking about insurances and what they cover, I must recommend you all to watch the movie "The man who sued God", since incurance companies tend to refere to "act's of God" which they don't insure.

Saw this a long time ago. Funny movie, good concept. Billy Connelly is usually fairly entertaining. I watched Battle Royale from your OOAK recommendation the other night, great movie!

Well done Silver on his timing!

I have a couple of bottle forum mates in Townsville too... they have spent the last couple of days packing up their collections!

I see Yasi has been upgraded to a Cat 5 system now.. that's scary! Sure is a monster storm

The weather bureau says "THIS IMPACT IS LIKELY TO BE MORE LIFE THREATENING THAN ANY EXPERIENCED DURING RECENT GENERATIONS"!!!

Any wonder people are heading for the hills!!

How did you go Chris? What events did you enter?

I saw Eddie Cotter tonight and he got ousted from the quarter finals of the Open by Robbie Frank I think he said. Did you see any of the top matches?

Hey Reb,
I entered Division 1, 2 and 3... as well as the O/30s and the Restricted singles...
Had some good matches but didn't get anywhere, even in Division 3 where I was the number one seed! Got knocked out in the first round by some young kid just back from a training camp in China!! Should have won it all the same as I won the first 2 games... but he came back and beat me in 5  Full credit to him though... he played very well and never gave up.

I played Korous for the first time and actually got a game off him... which I was pretty happy with!

Yep... I did watch some of the big guns, including Robbie Frank and David Powell (who won the open I think). Some great TT action there

Was a good day out... but I think I'll stick to the Vet Tournaments! Too many young kids at the opens, who are way better than their rankings suggest...

Mmm.
I guess fleeing the country is a valid option.

Not too much damage. A few trees down and a gutter fell off.
