Clips From the 2010 Australian Vets Championship - Held at MSAC
« on: October 25, 2010, 06:11:50 PM »
Over the next few weeks I will upload as many clips as I can, some good, some not so good.  Sorry about the camera wobble - These were taken with my iPhone 4, the Final was taken with my DV Camcorder.

What happened to Wayne Heginbotham and the other bloke (name escapes me atm) who pulled out of the o40 finals?

Wayne has a couple of slipped disc - so he didnt want to risk it, and the other fella was Heit Tran, a doctor from NSW. He had patients booked in for Saturday. He didnt expect to get so far in the draw, he has a very good game - uses Tibhar Grass D-Tecs to upset the play, and I must say he uses them well.

I'm uploading them without any reduction in quality, so the files are quite large and take hours to upload.

The next ones is with Pinky, and his oppenant can play. This one's with my camcoarder about 350meg

Thx for posting - very entertaining and good production values. BP looked more dynamic but the other guy was very steady. BP could've mixed his service length up a bit - virtually every serve was long.

Keep em coming Rob. will you be in any of them?

Over the Tournament week I had about 4 houirs sleep per night. I only managed to get footage on the 2nd last Day because that when our stand had been packed up. It was very hard running to and from the shop.

Blocker, I've faced BP's serves and yes, nearly all long and fast but lots of variations! In cricket terms, it's like facing Max Walker in his hey-day.... the deliveries are quick and can go anywhere, with swing too! I found them very difficult to read and certainly I wasn't up to attacking them!

Rob, thanks for the clip... looking forward to watching more  Did I recognise Zolton's voice yakking to you??

Chris, I am sure BP's serves are tuff for the likes of you and I but his opponent seemed to be on to them fairly well and BP was being put on the defensive from the get go. If BP mixed up the lengths of his serves it could've kept his opponent guessing a bit more.

Yes, I do agree Blocker... just merely confirming that it's a BP-ism having long fast serves!
And yep, his opponent seemed to be on to them pretty well... sure sign of a quality player, I guess.
Who won this match, Rob?

Chris I looked up results and I'm pretty sure BP won the match. I think the recorded match was actually one of the other guys best. Maybe he didn't handle the long serves as well in the other sets.

Thanks Reb... even though BP was down 0 - 2, I had a feeling he may have won the match!

He's quite an amazing player to watch in the flesh and quite awesome from the other end of the table for noobs like me! (seems to be a forum word, so I'll try it on for size!  ).
Once again, videos can't capture the the whole picture... I think it's BP's pure agility that is most impressive for a guy on the wrong side of 50!

Just checked the result. BP won 14-12 in the fifth after being 0-2 down. It was the 1/4 final of the over 50s not the semi. I agree Chris, BP is a very exciting player to watch.

Been wanting to see Sharad play, so thanks Rob. I'm about to go watch it. I was talking to Eddie C (21 yr old who you used to play you at Sunshine I believe, said he knows you well) the other night. He said Sharad plays a crazy game, so I'm looking forward to some entertainment here.

It is the full match except for the 2 games won by Brian. I'm sure he must have played better in the first 2 games as he doesn't seem to be playing with any confidence at all in these 3. He seems to be waiting for something to happen rather than trying to make something happen.

I agree JKC. Brian plays very passively in what we see. Doesn't look very classy TT on his part considering his level. It comes back to the judging TT off vid thing as I'm sure it must have been Sharad's spin making things tricky.

I have one question for anyone who want to answer. Sharad makes a serve around 5.25 and I would think it wasn't legal with the toss height. Opinions?

Reb, I think Sharad uses pips both sides so he wouldn't have been using much spin himself. However, it's very tough to chop against guys like that - you don't get much to work with. Also, Sharad made very few unforced errors.

Yes Sharad does use pips both sides, but He gets a bit with the short Tensor pips.  It is extremely difficult to judge where he's going to hit, I spoke with him about the match, and he said that when he was 2 games down, he told himself to Focus on a point at a time, And he decided that he has to move better if he was going to turn the game around.

I did film the whole match, not sure what happened. I will dig the other 2 games up, and we can talk about Brians good points.

I haven't looked up the result of this match, but I would say Pinky might win it simply through "trickiness" and track record. Li seems to hit good attacking strokes but he also misses a little too easily. It could go either way as they don't seem to have a huge gap in their respective skills, but Pinky's chop and spin variation may just be too much for Li in the end. I am amazed Blocker hasn't thrown 2 cents in already!

Pinky determines the winner. Li gives away free beer on some serves and on nearly every chop Pinky lands near the endline, but Li hauls in the cash on the high, not so deep chops. li doesn't exactly step around like a track star, so I would guess that Pinky has the better chances and control of the match. It is Pinky's to lose. Pinky did mis-read a few pushes, which is surprising.

Australian Veterans Championships 2010 Video Clips
« Reply #20 on: October 29, 2010, 08:47:03 AM »
Ok, Finally after 3 attempts to upload this Clip, Brian Berry from Victoria playing Gregg Letts from W.A. in the Over 40's event of the 2010 Australian Vets Championships.

Although the title say's Game 1 its infact Game 1 & 2, Games 3, 4 & 5 to follow.
I would like you to take some notes on the awful strokes that are played on either side. And comments and discusions good or bad a welcome, keep them above the belt though.

Because of the styles of the 2 players you are not going to get long flowing rallies but the standard is still very good, especially in the first game. Both players hit many quality shots. Greg's block at 0.45 was a beauty.

Me too!  :cheesy: And I think he has gained a little weight from last vid I saw. Love the leggin's LOL.

The gameplay is fairly average, although I love the block Greg sends back at a million miles an hour past Brian in the first set, and the look on Brian's face is priceless.

AM I right to assume that Brian is a high risk player? He's got some nasty speed on his attacks, but misses a lot of them, but since the reward when they are on almost always is a point, he can afford to play with such a high risk. Wouldn't want to play against him on his good days.

As for Gregg, have to agree with Silver, it cracked me up when I saw the pony tail

Brian has a very casual style doesn't he? Seems outwardly relaxed with everything. I wonder if its a different story going on, on the inside LOL.

Brian is Tougher than he looks, If BE is super consistent on both wings (as he say's he is) and plays a smart game, then I recon it would be a good match - one worthy of watching.
BE, what can you see from these clips that is an obvious fault in Brians game, what are his weakness's, and what are his strength's.
