Geko is back post injury-ish
« on: September 18, 2010, 09:24:12 AM »

Hey guys this is me playing tonight against a solid A grader (Tin has a 76% win in A grade).
Any constructive criticism would be much appreciated! My forehand looks pretty awful (I wasn't joking when I said I forgot how to loop Reb!), hopefully that will piece itself together in the following weeks.

Personally, and please dont get me wrong - I think you are simply trying to hit the ball to hard.
Its obvious you have a good understanding of the game, so why not slow it down a little and add some control to you game.  Try and work up a sweat playing each point. If its over in one stroke, then either your oppenant is 2 weak or you are a table tennis GOD (and even he had to work for his points)

I think the knee braces give Geko away Rob

Geko what exactly did you do? How the heck did you manage to injure both knees?

As fr your game, forgetting how to loop looks like the least of your worries. You MP looks like is the black. You're doing ok with it, but sometimes you open up the face with it too much, especially when you chicken-wing it. I sort of agree with Rob's advice, except I tend to be guilty of finishing points quickly myself. Now if I'm on, there is no probs with this (and last season I was On more than off). I am finding myself backing off the first FH more though and building the attack up. It tends to lead to greater attack success. Your MP attack looks pretty good at times, but its usually the shots to his BH where you are coming across the ball where you are getting the angle of your bat right.

Oh and if I was umpiring your matches I'd want to call all your serves illegal!  :cheesy: You throw the ball back about 2 feet at a 35 degree angle! You're not a lost cause yet tho! LOL

No I think this is a very important message. I just gotta get it in my head that I have to extend the rallies to improve. Thank you.

Here's a list of my current injuries: 3 herniated discs, tendonitis in both knees, medial meniscus tear in right knee, pinching of lateral cutaneous nerve on right quad, left distal clavicular osteolysis, slight widening of the left AC (acromioclavicular) joint, osteophyte at distal end of right clavicle.

I'll have to put more work on my MP, I'm finding it hard to find the right angle, as it changes every shot.

Yeah, my serving is neither legal nor effective atm haha. I'll invest a couple of hours in it.

Thanks mate! I have a general idea of what to work on now. Rallying, backhand and serving.

First off, welcome back to some serious TT, which is significant coming off the wheelchair/Intensive care Unit/crutches/tourniquets, etc.

At this stage, it is not about your Fh loop. You didn't need much of one against this opponent to stop him from attacking. Your BH finish or pressure served you well enough. As for serving, since you tossed that ball so far back, it made it much more difficult to keep short when you wanted it. Not saying everyone must serve short each time. Long serves are great when the opponent is not expecting them or you are limiting their options to something you reasonably expect. I see a LOT of room to grow a serve game that leads to outright points, setups for easy finishes and chances galore to start the point the way YOU want to do it. Your FH loop, well with enough of the right kind of reps, you will correct it. A grip change and a pile of reps really helped me out there.

You do very well closse to the table with the BH. You do very well making a connecting shot to stay in the rally. half of those were awkward for your opponent to attack, so he layed off most of those and lost the point most of th etime when he tried to finish those. The other half were right where he wanted and you ate toast on those. You seem to already making decisions to keep the point going longer and to a place where you like your chances on offense. You will grow that part with more time. You also seem to have opportunities blockong close to the table at wider angles to move the opponent even more to reduce his chances of a strong/sucessful attack.

Well dun vids forum friend.

Geko, dont worry about your TT game, worry about how your going to fix all your injuries - your simply to young to be suffering like this.

I agree with Rob mostly. The only thing I would say in any opposition is that focusing on getting your TT back is a good distraction for you while you recover from the injuries. Be patient though and don't expect huge steps in improvement or you'll push yourself too fast. Just enjoy the fact that you can play again and take regular rest breaks so you don't build any muscle fatigue.
