Practising/warming up against pips/anti?
« on: August 05, 2010, 08:40:31 AM »
I was curious about how you guys feel about this. Is it beneficial for your game to practice/warm up against pips/anti players? I'm not talking about learning how to play against pips/anti, but your regular game against your average opponent.

I know I don't like to warm up against players who uses pips/anti as it ruins my timing and it seems like once it is ruined, I can't find my way back to it again during that session.

How ever, if I get to warm up against regular inverted rubbers, I have no problems playing against or practising against pips/anti, I just don't want them when I warm up.

The reason I bring this up is because we have a LP blocker who constantly uses his LP to cover the entire table even during warm up, which really screws up my game for the night. If I get to warm up with some one else first, I don't mind playing him, but I hate to warm up against this guy.

We also have a anti player, but he twiddles and uses his inverted pretty much, especially during warm up, so I don't mind warming up against him. As for my own behaviour, I try to stick to inverted while warming up and only asks for a couple of shots towards the anti at the end of the warm up.

I know exactly what you mean when it comes to this, and I know how it can kinda mess up a good solid hour of play post hitting with junk rubber.  I have figured out what works best for me based on a couple of months with a few guys at the club that play the pips and anti rubbers.  Number one completely avoid that rubber in warm up.  From what I have read we can check that box for you.  Most junk rubber players don't mind if you warm up never hitting into the junk.  This guy sounds like a bit of a tool.  Number two just don't warm up with him for a good amount of time.  If it's going to ruin your timing and rhythm you can limit the damage by not investing alot of time directly into the warm up.  With these guys, I usually hit three balls and tell them I'm ready to go and tell them to roll it up as soon as they are ready.  Then hit about 10 more exchanges and encourage them once again to get it started.  The second time almost always works....heh.

I tend to like going FH to FH or FH to their BH if they are dual inverted. I dislike too much LP strokes in warm up except for the odd drive shot off the pips to hone my stroke in there a bit. Generally though you can't keep a continuous warm up rally going at decent pace using pips. There is too much variability about the shots.

I find that most pips players don't like to show me their pips action in warm up anyway.... they tend to keep it til the match for maximum effect.
When warming up, I'll hit the odd one to their pips just to see how it comes back and try and work out my game strategies.... but most will be hit to their inverted to try and get some good rallies and actually warm me up!!

If the upcoming matches are not against pips at all.... but I'm having a warm up hit with a pips player, then I totally agree with Speedy and would not hit one ball to the "junk" side!

Cheers,
Chris
