pip structure
« on: November 29, 2007, 12:15:08 AM »
Pretty much every rubber I have played with had a verticle pip structure,I just recieved a sheet of SP Transcend and they are arranged horizontally.Does anyone know what effect the arrangement has on a rubber?
I am thinking Silver or JKC may know this

Vertical pip structure works more effectively for generating spin when brush looping, so it is a suitable choice for Euro loopers. It is good for players whose game is based on spin and placement, but is less stable when trying to block or smash than an equivalent horizontal pip structure.

Horizontal pip structure is considered better for blocking and smashing because it is less affected by incoming spin and it  will also generate more speed and less spin than an equivalent vertical pip structure and is therefore better suited for flat hitters or players who prefer speed to spin.

The example that comes to mind is Sriver L and Sriver S

The topsheet and sponge used is exactly the same for both rubbers.

The difference is Sriver L has a vertical pip structure, whereas the Sriver S topsheet has been mounted 90% differently on the sponge, creating a horizontal pip structure.

Sriver L
speed 75
spin 75
control 70

Sriver S
speed 80
spin 70
control 70

I have a feeling it's because when you loop and your bat is horizontal, you get less movement between the topsheet and rubber due to the vertical shear force.

For a relaxing time, make it a Suntory time.

Hi All,

Just my piece in here.

Vertical pip structure allows better speed generation for shakehand movement as u tend to swing above ur wrist. (sorry, dont know how to explain this better, but think of ur FH, where the head of the blade is pointing away from ur body and swinging upwards, hence, the vertical pip forms a line to support the movement)

Horizontal pip stricture allows better speed generation for Pen grip - as compare to shakehand, pengrip swing below the wrist (try to think of Ma Lin, when doing FH loop, the blade head is pointing towards downward-right and then swing up; hence the horizontal pip forms a line and supports the movement better)

Lastly, Horizontal pip is more consistent in flat ht bcoz hit tend to be less upward movement but mostly forward, as which horizon pip provides the necessary support - thats why majority of short pip are horizontal structure even in shakehand. This could also be explained as vertical pip for hitting can soemtimes generate too much kick from the pip hence make the hit inconsistent.

Cheers,
H

ckhugo;

I haven't got a clue if you are right or wrong on this, but your answer seems to be very logic thus making me think it's correct. Good explanations!
