Rating systems?
« on: May 12, 2010, 03:39:33 PM »
I know about the USATT system and have a rough idea how that works, but that is about it. So, how do your rating system work? I read a post from Rob about some comp where their rating wasn't effected and that sounds pretty much like the one we have here.

I play mostly league play and have only played our own home tournament and one other tournament (Making it a total of 4 tournaments entries for me) but to gain rating, I have to play more tournaments as this is the only way to gain rating. No rating points are awarded for league play, which is kind of strange if you ask me. In theory, I could play the top league here, while been rating in the lowest grade possible, as long as I don't enter and tournaments and gain points in them. Do you guys have the same system?

As for the US guys, I've only ever read about tournaments from you, don't you have any leagues over there? If you do, do they give rating points as well, or are rating restricted to tournaments?

USATT has two different rating systems (the rating methodology is the same for both)
- one for USATT members based on results in officially sanctioned tournaments
- one for members of USATT clubs with official leagues

Club members do NOT have to be USATT members (US$47 annual fee) to receive a club rating. Based on a comparison of the two ratings among members at my club, the tournament rating is usually significantly lower than the club rating. I would assume this is due to the strict enforcement of tournament rules, competitive pressures, lack of familiarity with opponents, fewer games which cause bigger swings in the ratings, more highly motivated opponents, etc.

At my club, the league uses a round-robin format in which the 5 or 6 highest rated players are Div 1, the next highest are Div 2, etc. From one week to the next the lowest 2 in each division (based on previous week's results) rotate down, the highest two rotate up. Visitors can also participate in the league and will be seeded by their USATT rating if they have one. Otherwise, visitors must play in the lowest division, though sometimes when it is obvious that they can play at a higher level they may be moved up accordingly.

For players entering a sanctioned tournament for the first time, a club rating can be used as a players initial rating for seeding purposes. However, to prevent "ringers," the player will still be considered "unrated" for that first tournament, which will disqualify the unrated player from advancing beyond a certain level or for receiving prizes in class-level categories. Of course, even an unrated player can play open events without restriction, though these usually have a minimum rating requirement that would be hard to meet without at least a club rating or other international rating to base it on.

Just read it Der_Echte!

Seems like the Korean system is a lot like the Swedish system, which makes me ashamed to admit that I'm in the hope division :embarrassed:

I should be playing one division higher, but I don't play enough tournaments to gain my points and I never enter the hope division since the level there is no challenge at all. Besides, the comps that actually have a hope division is really rare around here, as most start from the second lowest division and moves up from there.

(Also, it's not called hope division here, it is call H5)
