Table Tennis Played with Tennis Scoring
« on: February 21, 2010, 08:04:59 PM »
Have you ever done this.
About 5 years ago, just for fun I played my then freind & coach using tennis scoring. At the time I was about a 30% chance of winning, yet when we played with Tennis Scoring rules, I won 100% of the time.

Try this and let me know your thoughts

Rob

Were you aware that when Table Tennis was in it's infancy in the 1880's, that Tennis scoring was originally used?

The first mentions of up to 20 points first appeared in rules with some table tennis sets around 1901; but there wasn't any worldwide standard form of scoring at the time, so both points and tennis scoring were used and were still in use up to 1928.

A formal scoring system didn't come into being, until the first ITTF handbook was published in December 1926 and the ITTF adopted the 21 point system; which was the scoring system used by the Table Tennis Association of England.

The reason for adopting the 21 point scoring in 1926, as well as specifiying the size of the table, size of the ball, net, etc was to standardise the rules of the game, for international competition.

There was still a proviso to allow for tennis scoring to be allowed, but it wasn't used in international competition and was abandoned by the ITTF in 1928.

Peter, I did not relize this. Why dont you try and play a couple of social matches using Tennis Scoring - just to see the differance it makes to the end result.

It's a novel idea, do we play over three or five sets though?

Just play one set & you will notice a differance.

I really don't see how it could change the out-come of the match. It could make a match seem a lot less even, cause if I played, say Biggy and for every 2 points he won, I would win 1. With TT scoring, I would then lose 5-11 or something like this, but with Tennis scoring, I would lose 0-6, unless I somehow manage to win more then my share of the points.

Speedplay, wiggy could get hit by a bus and still beat you  hhh
No seriously, you have to try it. I dont know what caused it, but at the time I was not a sure winner against this guy, but when we played with the tennis scoring, I beat him each time.

Must have something to do with the abilty to keep trying to break his serve, as I have always been a good return of serve, yet Tennis always favours the server.

Still don't see why tennis scoring would make a difference, except for the fact that if you use tennis scoring, you will serve more then 2 serves in a row, and this might allow the receiver to get used to the serves better and/or it might help the serves use more deception since he can set up for more deceptive serves, say serving 3 heavy backspin to  make the opponent prepared for that before serving a float.

And yes, Biggy would beat me with what ever scoring system we used.
