Swedish 13 year old beating Allen Bentsen
« on: January 28, 2010, 09:43:21 AM »
A Swedsih kid at the age of 13 beats Allen Bentsen in a real match, pretty impressive. This was roughly 2 years ago, and the kid, Alexander Franzen is currently rated third amongst Swedish up to 15 years old boys.  Not sure what ranking Allen had at the time, but I do think it was an embarrassing loss for him.

Although the kid plays well, he is good, I dont believe it to be creditable, There is no way a player can win with his inexperience against a player of this experience if it is true. Even if Alan Bentsen is having a bad day, not possible.

The match was played in a real tournament, but I'm not sure how serious Allen Bentsen was about the tournament. Since they switch side at 5-1, I think he must have played some shots for real, otherwise they wouldn't reach a deciding set.

I'll see if I can dig up some more info about this match.

Coaching him? In a tournament? Sounds a little bit odd to me. Don't forget, Waldner was only 14 when he reached his first European Championship final and I'm sure he did beat players, who at that time, was considered to be way better then Bentsen ever have been.

On Mytt someone claims Allen was rated at 67th place in the world at the time, but, not knowing his history, I think that sounds a little bit to good to be true. But, I don't know how good Allen was at his prime and I don't know his ranking when this event took place, but I'm still trying to find information about it.

The Swedish TT-guru I asked about this thought it was in Halmstad Masters 2008, so a serious tournament were I'm pretty sure Bentsen wanted to win.

Biggy, looks like you were wrong on this one

I've got it confirmed that it was in a serious torunament and the match actually was important for Bentsen when it was played. How ever, he managed to pull through the group despite this loss, seeing how all players ended up 1-1, Bentsen advanced due to better set results.

No, he was eliminated by Istvan Moldovan in the round before the quarter-finals. 9-11 in the deciding set.

So will this young 13 year old Swedish boy become the next Waldner.

So will this young 13 year old Swedish boy become the next Waldner.

I doubt that the next Waldner will be Swedish, looking at our small population I would say it is highly unlikely that we will once again be able to get such a talent forward.

What impresses me is that a guy who at the age of 13 did beat Bentsen is only rated as number 3 in the boys up to 15, using some logic here, we should have at least 3 15 years old (or younger) who is better then Bentsen  Perhaps we should send them to the Olympic games instead
