Let the right one in.
« on: January 12, 2010, 09:20:08 PM »
Has anyone else seen this truly haunting Swedish film? Best film I've seen for years, beautifully shot, with a snowbound glimpse of 1980's Sweden, it is one of those films that just stays with you.....

I hate Swedish films, but this is actually a film I've considered watching. Haven't done it yet though. Now, with your recommendation, I might actually have to buy it...

It's about a kid who gets a new friend who turns out to be a vampire, or something like that. Got loads of praise here when it was released.

I think I've mentioned before, I don't watch crap films, or if I make a mistake I either walk out of the cinema or turn it off. The cinematography, dialogue, acting, characters and overwelming sense of empathy is amazing in this film. The film manages to convey an atmosphere rarely achieved, dark, grim, despondent, yet an underlying euphoria from the main characters, and everyone likes a bully to get his come-uppance, well this is one of the best you will ever see. The subtitles are no problem because there is little dialogue anyway (no problem for Speedy)
Interestingly Rob, my sister-in law who lives in Melbourne recommended it, she saw it at the cinema there.

We have some "arthouse" cinemas here. I'd say it was shown at one of them, as it doesn't sound like a mainstream blockbuster we get at Village, Hoyts and so forth! Where abouts in Melb does your sister-in-law live Biggy? Know a suburb name?

Biggy, I do hope you are right about this one, since I just ordered it on your recommendation.

Reb, not that it says much about the film, but it has been declared the biggest Swedish film in a very long time, it won first price at some fancy film festival, it was awarded the price as best foreign film in USA -08 and it has been shown/is sold in 50 different countries.

I still think I'll hate it though... I'm not a fan of Swedish films at all.

I think it already is available on DVD, seeing how it was released in 2008, but I'm not sure it is available down under. I'll probably get my copy tomorrow, so Biggy better keep his fingers crossed that I like it

Biggy, you don't have to lose any more sleep over this recommendation as I have now watched the film and it was one of the better Swedish films I've ever seen.

It had both depth and darkness in it, as well as some"scary" moments. A very good film indeed, al though not likely a Hollywood blockbuster

I bought it for roughly 17AUD, but I guess the price is lower here, since the film have been on DVD here for some time now.

It's not an action film at all, rather a slow drama, but surprisingly enough, I enjoyed it quite much.
