One set up or set up depending on your opponent?
« on: July 22, 2009, 03:38:53 AM »
I've read that several forum members (mostly on other forums, cause we don't have several members ;)) change equipment depending on the opponent they are going to play. Some of them change between double inverted to inverted/pips, while other change to a faster blade against some opponents and stuff like that.
Now, what do you make of this, is this a good move to handle your opponents?

My answer is, NO!

We all know that consistency is important and I believe that it is more important to play with a set up that you feel comfortable with, then trying to find something to unsettle your opponent. Those players who usually use double inverted, but changes to pips to handle a specific opponents spinny serves, they will most likely harm there own game a lot more then their opponents. Also, they seem to believe that pips will solve any problems and that you don't even have to get used to them. Now, I know it isn't so, both pips and anti takes time to learn how to handle and despite many people's beliefs, they aren't self playing.

I admit that I do mock around with different set ups during practice, more because it is fun than anything else, but it also helps me realise what my equipment is good and bad at, but when it comes to actual matches, I always use the same set up. If I find something better, while messing around during practice, I might change my main set up, but not straight away as I prefer to play more with the "new" set up, to learn how it works, before I bring it out for a match.

Now, what's your take on this?
Dawei Wavestone Red Tenergy 05/Black Best Anti
Dawei Wavestone Red Roxon 450/Black Best Anti
Dawei Wavestone  Red Roxon 450/Black Best  Anti

And yes, I do love the Wavestone blade(s) =) (And almost 10 sheets of Nittaku Best Anti!)

Sticking to one bat is the best option, as it simplifies things and you get used to what it can and can't do.

Having said that, I have used two bats on a league night, back in 2007.

I was playing my final singles match of the night, back in 2007; against a blocker with short pips forehand and long pips backhand. I'd lost to her earlier in the season and it made sense to try something different, so I played with my old 30 year old Barna Max ply, with 2.2mm LKT XP pro instead of my normal bat. The switch worked as i won 3-0.

It's not something I'd normally recommend, as the disadvantage of having more than one bat, to cater for different players; is an unnecessary distraction. It can also disrupt your rhythm and consistency, by switching on the night and you also run the risk of choosing the wrong bat for the player you are facing, which can lead to you losing to someone, you would normally beat if you stuck to one bat.

What happened to slipping some Exlax (a famous American laxative that gives you the runs in a hurry) into the opponent's drinking water?
Can't touch FC Bayern!

I believe & coach 1 set-up for any player. Although I can see the merit in different set-ups.

Der you're an evil man!!  8)

I only ever use 1 set up myself.... in any given match!  ;)

LOL, ok so I do now and then change to a different setup if I know a particular opponent has given me more trouble with one than another. I did this last Tuesday night in fact. However, I did use the same setup all night then rather than changing for different matches on the night, which can be risky sometimes. The player I changed my setup from my primary for, I almost beat as well. Went down 12-10 in the 5th set. I went on and managed to beat another player I hadn't beaten before. Then I went back on Thursday to my primary Gergely setup and blitzed with it.

I think the fact that I tend to give most of my setups a good length of time playing with them (unless I just can't stand them, which I haven't really found too much with any), I think allows me to pick them up and be playing with them normally fairly quickly. Knowing the pros and cons intimately of each of your setups (if you use more than 1) allows for better choice of which to use if you know the player you are playing. Of course if you don't know their game, then using your primary is usually the best choice until you know more.
