Best and worst opponent for you?
« on: June 19, 2009, 10:36:40 AM »
Given your own style, what kind of style suits you the best and the worst to play against?

Also, what is it that makes one style so good for you and the other so bad?

Do you know what could be done to make it easier playing against the style that really hurts your game?

Let's keep it with in our own level as we all "enjoy" a win against someone with the style of pushing everything long or in the net, but lets assume they all are of our own standard so it is about styles.

The worst opponent is Mars63. He hits off the bounce, and is very quick. The Best would be Speedplay  ;D.
No seriously, the best would be a weaker opponent (only a little weaker though) that I have played many times. I generally use this as Practice time, Not 100% Practice, just enough to keep my opponent intersested and the pressure on for me.
I'm sure Supachop does the same to me :P.

I hate versing slow players, who place it short, and make me provide all the speed.
I enjoy versing fast players the most, where I can both take speed from them, and add speed with forehand loops etc, and the balls are hit at a position where I find it comfortable to hit back.
I am addicted to edge tape.

Given your own style, what kind of style suits you the best and the worst to play against?

Best would probably be a controlled looper, as this often gives me options to either chop or counter hit, so I can bring variation to my game..

Worst would have to be a flat hitter who tries to kill everything, cause regardless if he hits the table or not, I'm not getting any rhythm in my game.

Also, what is it that makes one style so good for you and the other so bad?

As explained, styles that give me options and ability to build up a point suits me pretty good, but short rallies isn't good for me.

Do you know what could be done to make it easier playing against the style that really hurts your game?

Actually no, as this style is more depending on my opponent then me, some of these guys don't mind hitting 10 shots long, they still continue to hit at everything, so even though I might win the match, there is no way for me to play them and feel comfortable.

Let's keep it with in our own level as we all "enjoy" a win against someone with the style of pushing everything long or in the net, but lets assume they all are of our own standard so it is about styles.

Not to many players of my superior level

Did you find Mars hard to play Rob? I would call him a serious challenge lol. Very awkward and makes you keep tight otherwise it blazed away and blocks against Mars are tough. Not just due to his speed but his uncanny ability to leave his smash direction to the last split second where you have shown your weight going in a particular foot and then he chooses the opposite side. He can also flick hit short balls from what seems below net height. I love the chance to practice against him, but of course he is above my level, so I would not pick him as a best or worst for this question.

I like players who love a fast game because I love to slow the game down and frustrate them into mistakes or to give me put away opportunities.

Like playing choppers, particularly ones who use LP. Don't like playing lobbers or players who block well close in.
