Lets all hate Windows Vista, shall we?
« on: November 08, 2007, 06:44:09 AM »
In an attempt to impress my parents in law, I was going to help them install a modem and a printer to their newly bought computer. Figured I should start with the modem and then download what files I needed for the printer. So, had a quick glance at the disk that came along with the modem and guess what? *I could install it on Win 95, 98, 2000 and XP. Further on, I could install it on Mac OS, Linux and 99.998% of all UFO's who happens to drop by, but off course I couldn't install it on Vista :o  3425, how did you know that?!?

So from now on, anyone who ever mention vista as a good thing will be expelled from ... No, not the forum, Rob don't want me to do that, so I'll expel you from the face of earth along with your computers so you can write some nice reviews how XIOM works in the space.

Also, if I ever mention vista in any post, you can rest asure its a negative thing, a distinct insult to the poster I'm arguing with.

So, until next time,
Hasta la VISTA, baby

Did you know that Vista running in idle uses in excess of 500 MB of RAM?  I find that fascinating that while it's doing nothing it's puting over 500 MB of RAM to work.  What a piece of junk recource hog!  That's just horrible.

My Notebook just died, and I deliberately made sure I ordered one, where I could Specify Windows XP - Not Vista. I've heard lots of problems occurring with this new operating System. Where's Peter C when you need Him.

It's got 4gb of ram :P

I challenge someone to use the word Vista in their next 10 posts.

Anything less than a Gig of RAM simply won't cut it with Vista. I can run Adobe CS, internet explorer, windows explorer, media player, and a few other apps at the same time with out too much problem. Now those instant messangers and anti-virus programs (especialy Symantec), they REALLY hog the resources.

Every time Windows comes out with a new OS, they make it more and more resource hogging. that is nothing new. Starting with 95, they changed the code for Korean and made everyone get new software. This kind of churning is not new. Vista is NOT compatible with a ton of printers. So, no matter what you do it might not just work. I hope that modem wasn't a dial up modem. All that is gonna do is make the computer user want to punch a hole in the monitor for the frustration of how slow it goes.

So, if EVERYONE simply quit buying and using their products, MS would have to shape up or jump off the cliff.

The crappy modem that didn't work was ADSL, but that wasn't what we needed. We needed a regularly dial up modem (analog) as they don't have any broadband access.

Vista simply sucks, I hate it!

Microsoft Vista is like XP back in 2001, in that it has made a lot of older equipment obsolete due to no drivers or support being available to run it.

Windows 95 and 98 had support and drivers for 16 and 32 bit hardware and software. In comparison, XP in 2001 was released with support for only 32 bit software and hardware. Therefore all 16 bit software and hardware that worked with previous versions of Windows was rendered unusable with XP. To carry on using 16 bit software and hardware required Windows 95/98. That's one of the reasons why Windows 98 is still being used  today by a lot of people around the world.

Vista likewise makes a lot of older equipment that works fine on XP obsolete too, mainly because Microsoft have deliberately not included drivers for equipment released more than 3 years ago and the hardware manufacturers will not be writing drivers for that older equipment either.

Considering Vista has taken 5 years to be released and it's basically rehashed XP with Aero 3d and the dreaded DRM added which chews up 500mg of ram in idle mode, Microsoft have produced a dud.

So why release it in such a state? Quite simply, that's how they make their money. They release software in beta form and rely on the public to notify them of it's bugs, which they don't always successfully patch.

For me Microsoft lost the plot big time last year when they introduced Windows Genuine advantage and stopped providing updates for Windows versions prior to XP.

The rationale behind Windows genuine advantage was to guarantee that only users of genuine copies of XP could update their pc's, forcing users of illegal copies of XP to upgrade to genuine copies.

It backfired spectacularly because people carried on using the illegal versions of XP without updates. Overnight they guaranteed that older versions of Windows and unpatched illegal versions of XP would become progressively more vulnerable to new virii and trojans.

The result has been more windows pc's being infected with virii and turned into bots for spammers to send a deluge of spam and phishing emails.

Windows Genuine advantage is also a big memory hogger and slows your PC down if you don't switch it off. I leave it permanently switched off as Microsoft only posts updates on a tuesday, once every 14 days. So why waste Ram and slow up your PC for a program that is run once every 14 days.

p.s. If you want a new PC, then I advise you to ask for a copy of Windows XP pro, as it's better than both Vista and XP home.

Aye, I would agree with all that.  Microsoft has really taken a dip here in the states since Vista came about.  You know what's funny about that though?  It wasn't their low functioning software that started to change the perception about their product.  It was the iPod.  Apple for years has been making a far superior product.  The biggest mistake M$ did this decade was come out with the Zune and futher support the growing suspicion that Apple was far superior, now people have figured out that this is in fact the case and are at least willing to try other things.  Linux and Apple have been doing far better of recent.  I'm pleased with this.  I don't have a problem with people making money.  I am all for it in fact, but when the money is made through the marketing and not through the engineering then I have a real problem with it.  All style no substance does nothing for me.

Has something happened to your PC to annoy you? Is it Vista related?

Microsoft has released a version of Windows 7 to download and try, on their website. It's possible that they will even make it available as a free upgrade for Vista. Let's fact it they have to do something like that to recover some credibility, after Vista.

My Wife's notebook, and my daughters notebook both have Vista, and although it dont crash, its a lousy operating system that's annoying to use. Instead of making it simpler, they have made it harder.

No Peter, the Vista OS works on my laptop just fine, although my new 17" HP laptop needed another mainboard, processor and hard drive the first week. Dells were even worse - out of the 50 Inspiron laptops running XP I managed on the network, maybe 10 made it through the 15 months without a major harware or software failure.

I wrote about hating Vista again as a tribute to Skippy, who knows whatever he is up to these days besides moping about no TT in his area.

Come to think of it, I can't recall seeing posts from him on other TT forums either.

One of my laptops has Vista and I still use one older one with XP on it because the newer one just doesn't cut it. Terrible performance on the net, even with 3gb of Ram, which should have been plenty. So its now a movie machine lol.

Perhaps you have a ton of services, programs, and Instant Messangers running from startup that you will never need. 3 GB is a sufficient amount of RAM if you are running 32 bit Vista. Maybe you are filling up hard drive space and pressing into the room allocated for virtual memory. Maybe you have 500 species of spyware that are not yet identified by man.
