My first match using Affordable purchased gear
« on: November 07, 2007, 11:33:26 AM »
You all know I recently got in a N-2 blade, Quatttro and Venus. I had a hit with my friends down Texas way and made a few vids. I haven't hit all that much recently and certainly haven't been so consistant. Still, using the nice black Quattro on FH, it was a better outing. I like how the blade feels and the weight distribution. Have fun laughing at the vids. I am the Joker in the Blue Dusseldorf jersey.

When you make solid contact on that backhand side it looks like the Venus suits you pretty well.  Actually, same with the quatro on the forehand too.  How are you liking it so far?  If I played that setup it would have to be flipped.

I have yet to hit (in a match) with Venus on the FH. I chose Quattro for the FH, because it is softer and a little less bouncier. That facilitates my FH slow loops. I can do good BH loops with about any sponge hardness, but prefer softer ones. When I took a second look at the three vids, I did notice that when I actually hit the ball (and NOT miss or muff it) that I landed an awful lot of my BH opening loops, like maybe 90 percent. That is the kind of percentage that reflects the level of consistancy I need. (I never land that high a percntage, even in what little practice I get) The last week, I was simply awful. This week, my tactics and mind focus were equally horrible, but I managed to land a LOT more shots. I credit it to my new equipment that suits my style. Maybe I give the faster Venus a go at the FH. I know I can loop with Quattro on BH. I liked that rubber from the first set of practice loops. Galaxy makes some real inexpensive blades (this one was dirt cheap) that hit every it as well as the more expensive BTY stuff. I really like the wood blade being able to both hit with just enough pace and the ability to loop. (I think the kind of spinny opening loop I use depends more upon the rubber and the stroke, but the fast loops with an open blade need a little flex) I still lost a lot of points where I made fast loops and couldn't deal with the return. I do way better landing a deep slow loop for the opener. There is more time to deal with the return if there is one. This guy I played used to just murder any high slow loop I put to his BH. Now, I can land them deeper and lower for a better chance to win the point. I really need to be able to reposition and anticipate a return from my good loops. I also really need to learn how to loop a topspin drive, so i can get into and take control of a loop rally. Eventually, I will get someone in Iraq to hit me drives to get that timing, stroke, and blade angle down.

At pro level, I agree. At our level, I disagree. He's playing a close to the table blocker and I don't think Der_Echte has the footwork to stick close to the table and keep on attacking those blocks, so I think he's better of by taking a step backwards to gain time.

What I say, and have said before, try to find a position that you feel comfortable with, then use that and serve! It seems to me like there is a little jump involved in all of your serves.

I also must ask, are you nervous when you play/play and tape? Cause you do look a tad like robocop sometimes. Still, a good effort, landed a couple of nice shots and had a good push/short game.

it's hard to make good shots when backing up,if he realxed and moved into shots instead of backing up he would do much better against any opponent.
My doubles partner does the same thing when someone serves him a tomohawk chop serve with a lot of sidespin,he backs up and tries to push the ball thus ball flys of the side of the table

Tense, because I am Army? No. Looking tense, because I am constantly pissed off doing stuff you don't like, OK, got that. I also HATE playing in that noise filled rec center where jokers walk in and out right next to you during a match. Afraid of Camera? No. I get too pissed when I miss clear, easy, free balls that should be put away or pressured at a 90% or better rate. Moving away when I hit? Yes. I can't judge exactly where the ball will go for shit. I seem to be constantly selecting a position a half meter too far from the ball, especially on the FH. i compound it by not bending enough at the knees and leaning a bit forward. i seem to bend backwards for a comical hit, and my momentum moves me back a step. I don't mind being back after I hit a spinny opener, the return will be long and that isn't such a bad place to be. I really wish i had someone to feed me enough balls to hit to correct this. All I really get to do is have a hit once a week. once the matches start afer a few minutes warmup, there is no practicing.

Actually, disagreeing with me, the mighty Speedplay?!? How dare you, don't you know I could... Well, obviously I'm so mad so I don't know what I could do.

If you are right in you assumption about moving back when making the stroke, then off course I agree. It's probably one of the worst things you can do, even a gigantic forward leap would be easier to do while hitting a successful shot.

very nice!!!  whenever ur forehand lands, its a bitch to block! much more fluid movements too, good stuff!

and ur blocks were beautiful.

btw, have u considered playing with long pips? ur playing style would totally fit!

on the negative side, all the shots u missed were shots u reached for the ball. stop reaching for the ball and place urself first then take the shot.. i see it, cuz i have the same problem! everytime u see urself going for the ball tell urself to land ur foot first, dont rush the ball, then take ur shot.

Haha Prior... Isn't that the friggin truth??!! I consistantly go to the wrong spot and have to reach or contort the body. It is a wonder I land half my shots doing that. About the pips, I did just get a LP bat to play with for when I am in Iraq. I had a short hit and I need a lot of awareness of the stroke needed for a reflex reaction and need to know the tactics as well. I like the LP's ability to manipulate the spin. I essentally (as you pointed out) play defensively, until I get the ball I want then flip on the offense switch. I do not think I will become a LP toting horror of an opponent anytime soon, so I see how that one goes. I look forward to the opportunities to get a steady training partner. that simply will not happen here in this current situation, unless I offer free cases of beer - that gets too expensive.  ;)

i think its all related to the same problem, you play ur BH for most of the table surface (which is why LP would be great for you.. ur 80% bh push, 20% FH+BH killer loop) so you're constantly out of position.

make it a mental exercise to come back to your neutral position after every shot, with ur racket in the neutral position instead of slightly closed favouring bh!

but watching those videos.. u kicked ass.. u landed some crazy shots.. those backhand loops u landed were like :o !

I think Priior is right about the movement,I used to do it all the time and maybe still do sometimes, the game is not as fast as you think sometimes and you normally have time to move before you play the shot, what that does is make your (blade speed faster which is a good thing) because once you move you then have less time to make the shot.IMO having a lot of time to make the shot is a bad thing.
I would suggest just have your mind focused that you are going to move to play all your shot's and forget about the score just concentrate on getting in good position to make the shots

Thanx for the undeserved favorable comments, Priior. Effective training is the answer and i don't think I will much of it here. maybe in Iraq, i can motivate some rec players to train or be lucky enough to meet up with at least an intermediate player, but here, out of the question. maybe I can build a table and put it into the trailer, then get a robot. That would be good for practicing moving to the ball, returning to the correct position, some short service return, and serve practice. I am not looking forward to another year or so away from the family, but the TT aspect looks promising.

I have always seemed tofavor the BH and have better coordination/shot percentage BH, but have recently been trying to be more FH oriented. If I could deal with hitting pushes and drives FH, I could probably get away with being in a more neutral position. I simply have no confidence to hit incoming drives with the FH. A Few thousand practice hit over there can help me with that.

Sorry Alfie, I didn't see the post until now. You are so right about getting the positioning right. If I ever manage to get into even a half-ass decent position, my attacking shots land much more consistantly, which really helps me out on both wings.  I feel like if I can land the shot, I get control or an outright point. At my level, and even up to the early advanced levels, getting the good positioning thing right a lot will carry me a long way. I will not be at the tourney this weekend, and probably won't hit at another for a long time, like until 2009. So, I will simply worry about fixing what I can with what practice I can get and wory about the rating points later.

Doc I know your not happy with your FH loop, take a look at your vids closely you don't follow through enough i.e. your blade stops at your chest height instead of going to your head height,I would focus on taking a bigger swing to get more topspin on the ball,if that does not do the trick then get a very soft rubber to increase dwell time something like plasma 380 or impuls speed

I'd say it's got more to do with Der_Echte being off balance when doing the FH loop.

Ok, I have watched alot of Der Echte now.  You've got a few nice strengths.  You seem to have good hands, and a good idea of how to end a point in short order when you decide to change the pace.  Also your loops look to be difficult to block when you get a good loop in (a good indicator of nice heavy topspin).  I don't think you are too slow by any means.  I think you do what I do (and the majority of table tennis players do).  When I am in the speed of the game, I concentrate on striking the ball always, but I lose focus of positioning myself advantagously to continue to enforce my will on my opponent.  Also if I made just the smallest bit more effort to hustle just a tad more and not stretch to hit the ball my ball striking would be far more consistent.
