Donic Persson Powerplay Senso V1
« on: April 19, 2009, 08:04:38 PM »
The Donic Persson Powerplay Senso V1 is a blade that's interested me for a while because I've tried friends blades, like the Persson Power Allround and Persson Powerspeed, and liked the way they play; particularly with J O Silver.

What do you think about the Powerplay Senso V1? and what other rubbers, besides J O Silver; do you consider a good match for it?

Peter, thats the blade I've been using for the last 6 month (it got stolen last week).

Close to the table all round play, its suited with Roxon 450 1.8mm & 2.0mm rubbers. Excellant control, fantastic speed & spin with the 1.8mm Roxon on the Forehand.

I'm not surprised it has excellent control, as the Powerspeed has very good control for a blade of it's speed too.

I've not used Roxon 450, but it is one i wouldn't mind trying at some stage.

When you finally get the chance, make sure you get the 1.8mm Version, everyone I have put onto it, has improved their game at least by 10% - with a massive improvement in consistency.

Rob

There was a Powerplay Senso V1, with a straight handle; on Ebay here in the UK. I won the bid tonight and it's just cost me £12.50 + £2.18 p&p, which isn't bad as new ones go for £26.49 + £2 p&p; from Jarvis Sports, a Donic dealer.

The blade arrived in the post today

It weighs 83 grams, the same weight as my Tibhar Samsonov Alpha. The balance point is roughly the same as my 86 gram Clipper Wood, so slightly less well balanced than the Alpha; but still a balance I am happy with, as the Clipper Wood is my main blade at present.

As I am familiar with Jupiter, I've transferred it from the Alpha to the Powerplay Senso V1, ready to test out at coaching on Saturday morning.

I have used both the V1 & the Solid Handle Version (in Competition) and they both felt very similar.

I used the Powerplay Senso V1, with Jupiter at coaching; for the first time yesterday. The bat weighed 178 grams on the scales and it felt distinctly lighter, than my 187 gram Clipper Wood/Jupiter set up.

Initially I started with some pendulum serves and it was obvious from the first few serves, that I was generating more spin; compared to the same rubbers used on the Samsonov Alpha. It also didn't take long to realise that it was easier to accurately place the serve where I wanted, both long and short too. So you could say it was a promising start.

The blade was obviously a better match for Jupiter than the Samsonov Alpha and spin was noticeably stronger on other shots too, like loops, drives and the short game. Likewise I noticed my short game was more precise too. Unlike Jupiter on the Samsonov Alpha, I was having no problem generating sidespin on loops either.

I liked the feel of the Powerplay Senso V1 and the way it played. Even though I've only used it at coaching and have yet to have a good looping/hitting session with better players; I already sense that this blade suits my game better than the Samsonov Alpha.

Don't get me wrong, the Samsonov Alpha is a good blade, but my initial impressions are the Powerplay Senso V1 has more gears and is a better blade.

In the case of the Samsonov Alpha, well I'll put some other rubbers on it and leave it in the TT bag for others to borrow at coaching or if anyone turns up at a club night without a bat.

Whether it will replace my main bat, an 86 gram Clipper Wood with Jupiter is too early to tell. But I will be playing with this bat on wednesday night down the club. That should give me a better idea just how effective this set up is, than at coaching yesterday.

Earlier today, I got to practice against a good Chinese player, who did some coaching and pointed out a couple of things that he felt I could improve on. A small adjust to the forehand loop, footwork on serve return and backhand loop all helped. I liked the way he was able to make a suggestion and offer a well thought out description of what he meant.

It did help and it also meant a good drill session too, for loops on both wings. For the drills I was using both my main set up, i.e. the Clipper Wood and also the Senso V1 set up. The drills were more consistent with the Clipper Wood, but I'm getting a lot more familiar with the Senso V1 as well.

Judging by Rob's knock with the outlaw, Ii think it might be a better match for the Senso V1, than Jupiter on the blade.

Over the weekend I replaced the 2mm Jupiter, with 2.2mm 42-44% New Era, on my Donic Persson Powerplay Senso V1. The red and black sheets weighed 101 grams and that means New Era is a heavy rubber. Fortunately I like bats in the 180-185 gram range, so it's not a problem.

My initial impressions of New Era were it's a spinny rubber, that has a shorter rebound and lower throw, than 2mm 36-38% Jupiter.

The first player I went on the table with, had long pips on his backhand and much to his surprise and mine too; he was having all sorts of problems coping with the variations in spin and placement I was getting on both wings and particularly the sidespin on forehand loops, which he consistently misjudged and saw the ball go past the edge of his bat. I also had an easier time playing against his long pips, compared to using Jupiter on the Powerplay Senso V1, which was a welcome bonus.

Another bonus I noticed was I found it easier to get more variations of spin when serving, compared to Jupiter and that was unexpected considering how spinny Jupiter is.

Like any Chinese rubber with a harder sponge, it will get quicker with a few more sessions and I'm looking forward to playing with it more. Judging by todays experience with New Era on the Powerplay Senso V1, I sense that this bat could be replacing the Clipper Wood with 2mm Jupiter; as my main set up.

Nearly a month on from my previous post and my Clipper Wood, with 2mm Jupiter still remains my main bat.

Why? because after a few sessions I realised that New Era on the Powerplay Senso V1, despite it's benefits; was actually harder to play with than Jupiter.

Blocking with Jupiter is easier than with New Era, notably when playing better players. New Era's shorter rebound and lower throw, meant more netted shots than normal. It was also more reactive to incoming spin and I realised it was less suited to my game than Jupiter.
