Maybe this blade had a liquid layer and by cutting it Rob let nearly all the weight go

I'll re-guess at 11.3grams then. I can't believe that little slice can weigh so much.

Take it easy, we cant close the comp so quickly, few more guesses, couple more question, the we might vote as to who had the most correct answers.

And can say, that everyone was at the wrong end of the scale. Although you are getting closer.

Think about it fella's. A blade weigh's 94 grams, the head is approx 155mm, and we take of 5mm - do the maths. its not that hard.

hahhaa a little more help for everyone, since its for me.

The blade is a single ply Hinoki JPEN with thickness of 10mm, 94g, 260mm in total length (Blade face length was abt 155mm /without the cork area I think) & abt 130mm wide.

Since I have this thing about light blade and a sore wrist I wanted a JPEN that is much lighter since I want to stick another rubber on the back for RPB, also as my shakehand blade only weights 76g :P

The other thing was I didnt like a JPEN that's too long anyway.

So, given the facts I provided above, now continue from Rob's question, what was the weight taken off when shaving off 5mm off the top edge of a 10mm thick, 130mm wide, single ply Hinoki JPEN?

After we get a correct answer on this one, then the final question will be:

What effect would this cut do to the blade? I want answers in feel, playbilities  and other thing u can think off.

Cheers,
H

OK here's the math, because I think 20 grams is going ridiculously the wrong way Priior  ;)

Priior's answer, btw, fits with what makes sense about Hugo wanting a blade around 76 grams, but the math of the area taken off doesn't fit with that weight. I was perplexed as to what taking a couple of grams off will do, but then in terms of aerodynamics I realised it would make quite a difference. The smaller blade (with less surface area) will cut the air more easily and not have as much resistance against its self created wind. This may have quite an effect on the g-force weight of the blade (which is much higher than the actual blade weight), thereby making it "feel" much lighter to play with than the 2-odd grams removed.  This will also mean recovery to position for the next shot will be less taxing on the wrist.

Is this closer to the answers you seek master?

hahahaa, reborn - very impressive, makes me wonder what you do for a living... CSI??? or working in a lab.

You are spot on the weight department, originally I was hoping at least 5g, but it was less than what I expected resulted in 2g according to Rob's digital scale.

As far as the aerodynamic thing - yes it is easier to swing given its less head heavy and less area for air resistence.

As an example for everyone to consider is that - the Korean using the Jepn were capable of producing those heavy, fast topspin that the Chinese couldn't (well documented by the Chinese), while on the other hand, the Korean with Jepn could never handle the short ball or block as well as the CPEN (also well documented by the Koreans).

This is due to the center of gravity on the jpen is more towards the head and head heavy which allows a more powerful strike. (Using a hammer with the same weight, under the same SPEED the longer handle hammer with produce the heavier blow). So the same principle applies here.
On the other hand, the CPEN, as its center of gravity or weight balance point is more towards the center of the blade meaning close to the wrist & fingers, this allows easier maneuver and recovery. Which allows more flexibilities in producing on table shot with a cpen.

Of course, there are also grip style and other things to consider, but take a note of how Ryu does his FH drive, his arm is almost fully extended with a rather long skinny blade - hence the blade become an extension of the whole arm, as which, from the hammer example above, we all know what good can this do - but of course a condition needs to be clear as the speed or power required to produce that swing would need to be up there.

Lastly,

What would everyone think of the feel of the blade after that 5mm cut off?

Cheers,
H

PS. In case some of you were wondering and doubting what I say, trust me,,, I know the TT manufacturer in China and actually make some custom blade for myself and proposed ideas abt how to design a blade, so I dont think I will be far off. And I actually talk to their head designer/GM who was the Beijing TT team coach for some times. hehehehehe, Just wish my TT skill can be as good as what I say though

Wouldn't mind being a CSI, but no I trained in the wrong field for that. I do have a qualification very involved with numbers though

I'll also guess it feels better balanced than it did before the 5mm was removed. And perhaps it also feels quite powerful with the weight its got behind it (depends a bit on the rubber you have on).  I have little knowledge about 1-ply hinoki, but I'm imagining its perhaps going to play in the OFF range?

Rubber? What is this, was this a rubber comp?!?

Yikes, if so I missed the oppurtunity to make tons of guesses! Not feeling as gulty about it now as I've finally ordered some stuff from Affordable. Haven't got my stuff yet but so far I can vouch for all the positive feedback from previous shoppers... :o

Yes, another Wavestone and a 804 anti. Will eventually get a sheet of Neoanti in red to use with it, but I thought I might as well give the 804 a try, might be worth it.

Yo Speed,

Let us know how the new wavestone compares to the old one.

mainly interested in knowing:

1. Speed, given its solid handle, the speed should be slightly slower

2. feel: Should be a bit more solid

3. Weight: how is the solid handle effect the head heaviness that was visible in the old version

4. Feel: the old wavestone had this absorbing ability that you and I talked abt, is it still the case in the new one?

Cheers,
H

Hi Speed,

Didnt know u actually picked up the older one :P

I actually had Rob cut down the old wavestone I got,,, since I dont like big blade size, and the total weight was still 85g.

Havent had the chance to have a good hit of it since I lend it to a friend and he is overseas on holidays in the moment.,,, but from memory, it did become firmer and stiffer.
