Question for Der....re Korea!
« on: December 20, 2011, 02:25:28 PM »
So what's the mood in South Korea like with the Death of Kim il Der? Any likelihood of it having a good effect?

I watched the 3 parts of this vid series today. Looks pretty odd over there in the North:

The Korean news is Non-Stop Kim Jong Il this and that. Most Koreans would really like to see other things in hte news. Koreans are understandably edgy about all this, but it was already in the works a long time ago. Kim Jong Un, the "Great Succesor" has nothing to gain by a war, so it is likely things will continue as they have, which isn't all that great. The situation in N. Korea cannot continue much longer, change will be demanded out of sheer destitution. The younger generation will fuel this change, yet the old-school jokers in high positions will try to stop it, still the new generation will make change. N. Korea will radically change anytime withing 6 months to a decade from now.

My 16yr old son is in South Korea at the moment training until Feb 10 or so. I have rung him and explained the situation re North Korea etc and asked him what he wanted to do...either come home or go to my brothers in Beijing or if you really want to,  stay.  He has has chosen to stay although I must admit I am not entirely comfortable with that decision.

Put him in touch with Der, PF_4.. he'll look after him. Hmmm, on second thought, not sure if that is such a good idea...Der is a corrupter of sorts hhh

Seriously though, hope he stays safe!

The only emergency I have this week is when I need to use the restroom, definately NOT this Kim Jong Il passing away thing.

The Korean Army, however, has called anyone on vaction back, or so I hear. My military is not at that stage or expected to be. About an hour after hearing about the news, I took a crap, cleaned up, and went to the club for training and a 5 hour hit. Big deal.

PF4, maybe if your son is around Seoul, he can do an event with our Korean Foreign TTC...

Unfortunately he is about 100 kilometers south as the crow flies and about 3.5 hours by public transport according to google

Can't get a much closer tournament than 3.5 hours around here, I'd go for it

Maybe Der should go have a hit with him first. It'd be worth Der's time to play such a talented young aussie teen who in US terms would be somewhere around 2500 or so I think (would that be about right PF_4?).

Not sure he recently beat Peter Li, the winner of the US Nationals on the weekend, in a tournament in China so I'm guessing something like that.

2500 USATT is a strong Div 1 National level player. I have my good and bad days vs that crowd. I am probably at least two Korean levels below that. I would be interested to check this youngster out. Exactly which city is he in? 100 KM from Seoul is one hour by bus if it is not traveling morning or late afternoon. Cheon-An is close to 100 KM south. There are express busses everywhere, even line 1 of the subway/monorail goes to Cheon-An.

Our Korean Foreigners TTC is running an invatational USATT sanctioned tourney around 21 January, so if he already doesn't have a USATT rating, he can get one and maybe win Class A group cash prize TBD. At the very least, he would cover his travel and food and fun expenses, unless he is Liberace.

Gonju shapes up to be a little Northwest of Daejeon. Yup, that is around 125 KM or so from Seoul. With the traffic on Expressway 1, that might take a bit, but I would wager that the express bus will take under 3 hours safely.

Still, if he ever gets a wild hair to go north to Seoul, I have a several teenage TT friends there, one of them a teenager on the Iceland national team.

Reb, for you, there would also have to be some beer, food, or something attractive to look at in the deal...
